Cloud Maker -- Adiabatic Expansion
From UO Physics Demonstration Catalog
Return to Heat and the First Law
Description:
A small amount of smoke from a burning match or small piece of burnt tissue is introduced to the large jar, the jar is then plugged with a rubber stopper. The pressure inside the jar is increased via a bicycle pump. After ~5 pumps close, the valve on top of the rubber stopper. Reopening the valve allows air out rapidly, adiabatic expansion cools the air, condensing the water vapor into a cloud inside the chamber. Illuminating the chamber increases visibility.
Location:
- Jar: Shelf T-2
- Lighter: shelf to the left of tool-box
- Bicycle Pump: Shelf G1
- Lamp: Q-3
- plug: with Jar on Shelf T-2
