A Sound Idea! Outreach Table
1. How is a sound created?
a. Something has to vibrate
b. Vibration causes Air to move.
c. The movement is back and forth creating areas of High Pressure and Low Pressure
d. Our Ear drum picks up those changes in pressure.
2. Tuning Fork in Water makes waves.
3. Sound travels be created Waves
a. Waves transfer energy d=from one point to another
b. Show Longitudinal Wave using Slinky
i. Transfers energy form one point to another
4. Speaker Moves Air
a. Low frequency like 0.9Hz
b. See speaker move back a forth
c. Increase by 10, to 90 Hz. Now you hear the speaker.
i. Play with Frequency control for fun
5. How to make a sound Louder
a. Move More Air
b. Spring and Spring in cup Demonstration
c. Thunder tube!
6. How to make a sound Louder with the speaker
a. Change amplitude, the distance the speaker moves
b. Area x Distance = Volume.. You move a larger Volume of Air, Thus Volume Control!
7. Other way to transfer Sound: Cups and String
a. String tied to a fork or other metals
b. Put the ends of the string in your ear and dangle the fork
c. Have the fork strike something and it sounds really cool!
d. Two cups and a tight string,
i. Talk into one and hear it out the other
ii. Pluck the tight string.
8. Project.
a. Talkie tapes
b. Cup Phone
c. Tie strings on kitchen utensils at home
