Lenz's Law Tubes
From UO Physics Demonstration Catalog
Return to Inductance
Description:
An aluminum tube and a matching set of cylinders that can fall through the tube. One of the cylinders magnets in the end and the other one does not. The one without the magnets falls straight the cylinder. The one with magnets induces eddy currents as it falls. The eddy currents create a magnetic field that are opposed to the direction of the field coming from the cylinder. This creates an opposing force and ity takes a very long time for the magnetic cylinder to fall through the tube.
