Return to Impulse and Linear Momentum
Description:
Everyone is probably familiar with the Happy/Sad Balls or the Bounce No Bounce balls available from toy stores or Arbor Scientific. Once I bought a set that included one ball where one side bounced and the other did not; two half balls glued together. I used this half happy ball to demonstrate the different impulses delivered by a bouncing ball and a ball that does not bounce. The pendulum is set as shown in the figure above. The ball is released from a height so that the bounce side of the ball knocks over the wooden block. If the pendulum is released from the same height on the opposite side of the block, the ball does not bounce off the block and the block remains standing. Have a nice day.
