Tyndalls Bar Breaker.gif

Description:

The flat bar in the middle of the apparatus is heated, causing it to expand. The nut at one end is tightened during the heating, so it is tightly fastened in its expanded state. When removed from the flame, the rod contracts as it cools, eventually breaking the cast iron rod perpendicular to the flat bar and located at the opposite right end of the rod. Be sure there is an 8 foot distance from the demo. Also a protective shield between the demo and the class is suggested,
