Description:
The rod in the middle of the apparatus is heated, causing it to expand. The nut at one end is tightened during the heating, so it is tightly fastened in its expanded state. When removed from the flame, the rod contracts as it cools, eventually breaking the iron bar located at the opposite end of the rod.
