Description:
Electrostatic induction machine that is able to build up a high quantity of charge and develop a high voltage. Generate sparks jumping a gap of 4 - 5 inches. Two capacitor Leyden jars can be hooked in series to obtain a high voltage.
To operate Whimhurst Machine:
1) Before touching flywheel make sure the apparatus discharged by touching the two contacts with plexiglass handles. (contacts A1 and A2)
2) Make sure dust is removed from all contacts and flywheels.
3) Ensure copper contacts are making light connection with flywheels and positioned in a X shape.
4) Inspect belts to make sure that they are aligned and secure (if tension needs to be adjusted look under the apparatus to unscrew a wing nut and position accordingly). With contacts A1 and A2 touching test the apparatus by turning the hand crank slowly in the CW direction to observe if the flywheels are spinning in the opposite directions and that the belt doesn't slip or fall of guide.
5) Connecting Contacts B1 and B2 puts the leyden capacitors in series which means a higher voltage to discharge.
6) Separate the contacts A1 and A2 to desired distance (max 4 or 5 in)
7) Prime Machine by Discharging a Teflon rod with rabbit fur on either A1 or A2 contacts.
8) Spin handle in CW direction and observe arc.
9) When done discharge system by connecting A1 and A2 contacts.
