A copper plate is mounted in such a way that it can swing freely in a plane parallel to the plate. When a magnet is placed in such a way that this plane passes between its poles, eddy currents will be induced in the plate as it passes between the magnetic poles. The result is magnetic braking -- a force arises that opposes the motion of the plate -- and the plate that would otherwise swing for many periods comes to a rapid stop.
